Washington state is making $18 million available for broadband infrastructure projects at a time when workers and students are increasingly reliant on home internet.

The Public Works Board is now accepting applications to fund internet projects throughout the state. About $9.1 million is available or low-interest loans and $8.5 million will be given in grants. Washington was already working to expand internet access before the pandemic, a goal that is more critical than ever due to large numbers of residents sheltering at home.

Eligible applicants include municipal governments, special purpose districts, tribes, non-profits, co-ops, and businesses as long as their goal is to expand broadband access.

Grants and loans will be awarded through a competitive rating and ranking process, according to the Washington Commerce Department. Applications will be open until Sept. 9.
