The (with a starting price of $399) is Cupertino’s most recent premium smartwatch. There are no changes to the highly rated predecessor’s health, safety, and lifestyle features, but it has a larger display that’s easier to read, improved dust protection and crack resistance, as well as a redesigned charging system that charges in less time. A minor upgrade from , the seventh generation’s enhancements make an already excellent smartwatch even more useful for everyday tasks such as reading and responding to texts, checking the time when your wrist is down, tracking outdoor activities, and keeping track of sleeping patterns. The Apple Watch is Apple’s most attractive and durable wearable to date, and it has been named an Editors’ Choice Award winner.

Simpler on the Eyes

At first glance, the does not appear to be significantly different from its predecessors. A rectangular case with rounded corners, as well as a side button and a Digital Crown/Home button, remain on the device. When you compare the to the and its more affordable but nearly identical sibling, the , however, you’ll notice the physical differences that have been made: In comparison to previous models, the has a slightly larger case and significantly narrower bezels, which allows for significantly more screen real estate.

Review of the Apple Watch Series 7

The large, bright, and colorful display on the is the device’s most distinguishing feature. The display border on the Series 3 is only 1.7mm wide, which is 40 percent thinner than the border on the and , and 60 percent thinner than the border on the .

offers 20 percent more screen real estate than the and 50 percent more than the With a resolution of 420 by 352 pixels on the 41mm model and 484 by 396 pixels on the 45mm model, the offers 20 percent more screen real estate than the Series 6 and 50 percent more than the . It can display 59 percent more text on the screen than the , which means you’ll spend less time scrolling when reading messages, emails, and articles on the device.

When turned on, the always-on OLED Retina display maintains a maximum brightness level of 1,000 nits, making it easy to read both indoors and outdoors, even in bright sunlight. However, when your wrist is down, it is now 70 percent brighter indoors, making it easier to check the time on your phone.

To take advantage of the larger display, Apple also updated the watch’s user interface. Button sizes have been increased to make them more accessible, which is particularly useful when entering your Passcode to unlock the watch, using the Calculator app, or enabling Do Not Disturb mode from the Control Center.

The company also added three new text sizes, bringing the total number of available text sizes to nine. If you have vision problems, you can increase the text size to a significant extent: To change the default text size, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size and change the value there. Furthermore, the Apple Watch includes a full QWERTY keyboard for the first time. There are no limitations to where it can be used; it supports both taps and swipes, and it uses machine learning to predict the word you’re typing as you’re typing.

Assessing Your Choices

With case sizes of 41mm and 45mm, the is an improvement over the ‘s 40mm and 44mm. The is available in 100 percent recycled aluminum, polished stainless steel, or brushed titanium materials. The 41mm model has the following dimensions: 1.61 by 1.37 by 0.42 inches (HWD). The 45mm model is slightly taller and wider than the 40mm model, but it has the same thickness, measuring 1.77 by 1.50 by 0.42 inches.

In addition to the Midnight color (a deep black with a deep blue undertone), there are five color options for the aluminum model, which starts at $399: Starlight (a blend of silver and gold), Green (which is new to the Apple Watch line), Blue (which is a brighter tone than last year’s Blue), and Product Red (a more jewel-toned ruby than last year’s red). Cellular connectivity is included in the price of the first model, which starts at $499.

Prices for the stainless steel version, which is shinier and more durable than the aluminum version, begin at $699 and are available in Silver, Graphite (dark gray), and Gold finishes. It costs $799 for the titanium version, which has the same durability as stainless steel but is significantly lighter. It is available in two colors: Natural (a silver hue) and Space Black (dark gray).

Apple sent me a 41mm aluminum in Starlight with cellular connectivity ($499), which I reviewed for this article. Sport Band straps in the sizes small/medium and medium/large were included in the box with my unit. Apple also included a ($49), which can be purchased separately. Check out our list of favorite Apple Watch accessories for even more information.

For those looking for a more affordable option, Apple is keeping the and in its lineup, with prices starting at $279 and $199, respectively. Check out our comparison guide to get a better understanding of what each model has to offer.

The internal specifications of the are largely unchanged from those of the ; it continues to offer 32GB of storage and support for both 2.5GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands. Because of its dual-core S7 System in Package (SiP), it has the same speed as the S6 in the , and it is 20 percent faster than the ‘s S5 chip.

A blood oxygen sensor for SpO2 measurements, electrical and optical heart sensors to take an electrocardiogram (ECG) and monitor your heart, an accelerometer and gyroscope to detect if you’ve fallen, an always-on altimeter for real-time elevation readings, GPS and GNSS to measure running and other workouts, a compass for wrist-based navigation, and an ambient light sensor to adjust the screen brightness are all included in the.

On the safety front, the watch can send you an alert if it detects an abnormally high or low heart rate, an irregular heart rhythm, or loud sounds that could cause hearing damage. It also includes Emergency SOS, international emergency calling, and the ability to automatically call for assistance if you are unable to do so after a hard fall or another incident.

smartwatches will be equipped with the most recent version of Apple’s smartwatch operating system, , which includes numerous new features such as digital house key support, overnight respiration tracking, workout tracking options for Pilates and Tai Chi, Portraits and World Time watch faces, new mindfulness tools, a revamped Photos app, and more.

Cyclists will benefit from a number of new features in , including the ability to automatically detect bike rides and the ability to be reminded to begin an Outdoor Cycle workout. In addition, Apple has updated its cycling workout algorithm to more accurately measure calorie burn when riding an electric bike, according to the company. If you fall while riding, the Apple Watch will automatically call for assistance. During workouts, such as cycling, Apple says it has improved its fall-detection algorithms to better detect tumbles and prevent injuries. It will automatically contact emergency services if the watch detects a hard fall followed by one minute of inactivity. You can turn off this feature if you prefer not to have it call.

While is available for free download on the and later watches, some features are not available on older models. For example, the Portraits watch face is not compatible with the , and the new automatic cycling detection feature, which requires Apple’s latest-generation motion sensors, is only compatible with the , , and devices.

Easy to Set Up

Similar to how the is only compatible with Android devices, the Apple is only compatible with Apple’s mobile devices. It requires an iPhone 6s or later running or higher to be able to use this feature. With an , I had no issues connecting it during my testing.

When I first opened the box containing my review unit, I had a brief panic attack when I realized that the included charging cord no longer used USB-A. Because there is no power adapter included in the box, you will need to purchase one separately. It includes a new Magnetic Fast Charge USB-C cable. Fortunately, the new charging cable is compatible with any USB-C compatible adapter, so I was able to use it to charge the watch by plugging it into my computer.

Even if you don’t have an adapter that supports USB-C, the Apple Watch will work with previous Apple Watch charging cables, docks, and other accessories. The battery will charge at a slower rate if you use an older charging cable or accessory, on the other hand.

As was to be expected, the setup process went without a hitch. When you place the watch on the charging puck, the display illuminates and prompts you to bring your iPhone close by for charging. After that, you’ll receive a pop-up on your iPhone asking if you’d like to use that device to configure the watch. Continue, then select either Set Up for Myself or Set Up for a Family Member from the drop-down menu. The latter option allows you to configure the watch for someone who does not have an iPhone of their own. Following that, the individual will be able to use the watch to make calls, send messages, and share their location with you via the internet.

To pair your Apple Watch and your phone, the phone instructs you to align the Apple Watch face with a viewfinder on your phone’s screen. Once the watch and the phone have been successfully paired, the watch will ask if you want to Restore from Backup or Set Up as New Apple Watch; I’ve used a number of different Apple Watch models in the past, but I chose the Set Up as New Apple Watch option. It will then inquire as to whether you intend to wear it on your left or right wrist, which is a common question when configuring most wearable technology devices.

This process takes a few minutes, as your phone connects to the watch and logs into your account on the other end. Following your acceptance of Apple’s Terms and Conditions, you will be given the option to enter your iTunes Store password in order to access Apple Music from your watch (you can skip this step if you prefer). It then provides you with the option to choose a font size and create a Passcode, both of which can be changed through the Settings app on your watch’s display. Following that, it asks if you want to install all of the available apps from your phone or if you want to pick and choose which ones you want to add at a later time. When you press the Digital Crown, you can also choose whether or not you want apps to appear in the traditional grid view (a collection of circular icons) or a list view (which is more organized but requires more scrolling) when they are launched. Then you just have to wait for it to finish syncing with your phone and you should be good to go!

New Watch Faces are now available.

Full screen ahead.

For most people, the first thing they do after setting up their Apple Watch is spend far too much time browsing, selecting, and customizing watch faces. If you’re anything like me, you’ll spend far too much time browsing, selecting, and customizing watch faces. The large screen of the makes for an ideal canvas for the new Portraits watch face, which is available now. Since I already explained how it works in my hands-on review, I won’t go over it again here.

The comes with two exclusive watch face options, Contour and Modular Duo, both of which highlight the advantages of the larger display provided by the larger screen.

Designed in the style of a mid-century modern analog watch face, Contour (shown at the top of this review) features groovy looking numerals set in a custom font on the edge of the display, emphasizing its size and ultra-thin borders. The face changes slightly to highlight the current hour, which makes it a little easier to read the time. The Contour watch face can be customized by changing the color of the dial and adding two complications (such as the date and weather).

Modular Duo is comprised of two large complications, as well as the time and a smaller complication at the very top of the screen. You can choose any three complications you want, as well as an accent color, from a variety of options. The large complications display additional information; for example, if you select Activity, it displays a graphical representation of your activity, hour by hour, instead of just your rings. With the large World Clock complication, you can see the time in your selected city, as well as a map of the world that shows which parts of the world are in daylight and which are in nighttime hours. The large Weather complication displays a five-day forecast, the Calendar complication displays your next scheduled appointment, and the Heart Rate complication displays a graph of your heart’s beats per minute for the current day.

Battery life is the same, but charging time is faster.

Review of the Apple Watch Series 7

Apple claims that the lasts 18 hours on a single charge, which is the same as the ,, and devices. In my testing, it outperformed Apple’s expectations, just as the did the year before.

In my testing, I was able to get 29 hours of use out of the with the always-on display turned on. Almost all of the time, I had Do Not Disturb turned on, which prevents notifications from flashing on the screen and thus extending battery life.

Naturally, battery life will vary depending on how the battery is used. The use of GPS to track a workout, disabling Bluetooth on your iPhone, or even simply raising your wrist to look at the display a lot will result in battery drain on your device.

Despite the fact that it does not win any longevity awards, the has a battery life that is comparable to that of its main competitors. In my testing, the had a battery life of nearly 24 hours with the always-on display enabled. Those looking for a longer-lasting smartwatch should consider the, which boasts more than six days of battery life on a single charge, but is also significantly less advanced in terms of functionality.

However, on a more positive note, the charges extremely quickly, thanks to its new charging architecture. Taking advantage of the watch’s new USB-C compatibility, it charges 33 percent faster than the . It can be recharged in 45 minutes on its fast-charging puck, bringing it from zero to 80 percent battery life. If you’re nearing the end of your battery life at the end of the day, charging it for just eight minutes will provide you with enough juice to track eight hours of sleep.

Better for trips to the beach and baking

Aside from the larger display, the most significant upgrade in the is the device’s increased durability. It’s the first Apple Watch to be certified with an IP6X rating, which means it’s completely dustproof. You shouldn’t have to worry about sand, dust particles, or flour getting into the watch and damaging it because it has the highest certifiable level of dust protection. In other words, the next time you head to the beach, hit the mountain bike trails, or even bake a cake, you won’t have to worry about losing track of time with the .

While recently visiting the nail salon, I was relieved to know that I had received this new certification in the process. When the technician used a drill to file my nails, I didn’t have to be concerned when dust and other particles flew everywhere. Furthermore, as someone who lives near the coast, dustproofing is a particularly welcome upgrade, as I’ve avoided wearing my previous Apple Watches to the beach due to the risk of getting sand in my eyes.

Review of the Apple Watch Series 7

In addition, the has a front crystal that is more crack resistant than any of its predecessors, making it more difficult to shatter the display screen. The Ion-X glass used in the is more than 50 percent thicker than the glass used in the at its tallest point. Apple also provides a flat base for the crystal in this case, which helps to increase the crystal’s durability.

The watch retains the same WR50 rating as its predecessor, which means it is water resistant to 164 feet. Apple claims that it is safe for shallow-water activities such as swimming in a pool or the ocean; the Workout app includes tracking options for both types of activities. You can also use it in the shower or while relaxing in a hot tub. Make sure to remove it before engaging in activities such as scuba diving, waterskiing, or any other activity that involves “high-velocity water or submersion below shallow depth,” as advised by Apple.

There will be no new health revolutions.

The Series 7 does not include any new health or features that are not already available on the . In spite of this, it offers a comprehensive suite of wellness tools, including integration with the company’sworkout streaming service and Apple’s motivational Activity, Exercise, and Stand rings. I also like that it can assist you in keeping track of your period and fertility windows, and that it has an automatic 20-second countdown timer to keep you on track when washing your hands.

If you’re interested in health tracking, Samsung’s latest flagship smartwatches, the and , have a slight advantage over the due to the addition of new body composition and snore tracking features that are not available on the. Samsung watches and smartphones work together to detect snoring and even record it when you wear one of the company’s watches to bed and place your smartphone on your nightstand. Snore tracking is already possible with the Apple Watch, which can track your sleep and overnight respiration. I hope Cupertino will add snore tracking in the future.

BioActive Sensor: The series includes a BioActive Sensor, which can be used to assess your body composition using a process similar to that used by smart scales, known as bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA). After a 15-second scan, your skeletal muscle mass, fat mass, body fat percentage, body mass index (BMI), body water mass, and basal metabolic rate are displayed on the watch’s screen (BMR). It also tells you whether you fall within the low, normal, or high ranges for each of the metrics you entered.

The has a significant advantage over the series when it comes to third-party apps, despite the fact that the series offers more health innovations. While Samsung’s watches have recently upgraded to Wear OS, they still lack a number of popular apps that are available on the Apple Watch, including Audible, CNN, Facebook Messenger, ESPN, Runkeeper, Starbucks, The Weather Channel, and Uber, among others. At this point, Apple’s continues to have by far the most diverse selection of third-party applications.

Lucky Number 7 is a lucky number.

Review of the Apple Watch Series 7

The improves on its class-leading predecessor by including a larger screen, faster charging, and increased durability in addition to other features. The combination of the latest hardware updates, extensive health and safety features, and an unrivaled selection of third-party apps makes it the best smartwatch experience available today, earning it our Editors’ Choice award.

If you already own an , on the other hand, you are not required to upgrade to the right away. While the larger screen makes it easier to read text and tap buttons, as well as providing a more beautiful canvas for your favorite watch face, it’s the larger screen that represents the most significant improvement over the previous model in our opinion. The rest of the time, they both provide an excellent user experience.

In terms of competition, the only non-Apple smartwatches we’ve tested are the $249.99, and the $349.99 , both from Samsung. Because those watches are only compatible with Android phones, whereas the and other Apple Watches are only compatible with iPhones, the best smartwatch for you will be determined by the phone you currently use.

Lastly, keep in mind that, despite their numerous impressive features, Apple’s and Samsung’s smartwatches provide only one day’s worth of battery life. As an alternative, we recommend the $229.95 , which has fewer third-party apps and a less refined feel, but can last for several days on a single charge and is Editors’ Choice.
