GeekWire Radio: Ride-sharing rules, our geeky gift guide, using the Nest Protect, and the Gigabit Seattle delay

There was a ton of news this week on the Seattle tech beat, starting at City Hall. That’s where we begin on the GeekWire radio show, with a recap of the debate over the city’s proposed regulations for ridesharing networks — a.k.a. “transportation network companies” — such as Lyft, Sidecar and Uberx. GeekWire reporter Taylor Soper, who has been covering the story, is in the studio to give us the details.

Then we dive into highlights from the third annual GeekWire Gift Guide, great gifts from Seattle and the Northwest that any geek will love. GeekWire columnist Monica Guzman also joins us in the studio to talk about some of our favorites from the list.

From there, we get the lowdown on the Nest Protect, the high-tech smoke detector from the people who brought you the Nest thermostat. Findwell’s Kevin Lisota, who reviewed the Nest Protect for GeekWire, gives us the details on what it’s like to have this device in your house.

And finally, we return to City Hall for a recap of what we learned this week about Gigabit Seattle, the high-speed fiber plan that has been delayed and appears to be in jeopardy, due to the inability of Gigabit Squared — the company behind the project — to line up adequate financing for the initial buildout.
