Yesterday, Donald Trump met with tech industries top luminaries — many of whom the president-elect sparred with during the campaign — at Trump Tower in New York City.
Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, as well as chief execs from Apple and Google parent Alphabet were among the attendees.
As GeekWire’s Todd Bishop, Kurt Schlosser, and Monica Nickelsburg discuss on this episode of the GeekWire Podcast, the fact that these tech leaders and Trump were in the same room is more newsworthy than the content of the meeting itself. They also dig into what a more tech-savvy candidate might have discussed with the execs at the table.
In a partial video of the meeting, Trump thanks Thiel for his support and addresses a few of the tech industry’s concerns in broad strokes.
Murphy and Kaser join us on this episode of the GeekWire podcast to discuss their role in solving this difficult situation. Anything we can do to help this go along … we’re going to be there for you, and you’ll call my people, you’ll call me … it doesn’t make any difference. We have no formal chain of command around here,” Trump said, adding “We’re going to make it a lot easier for you to trade across borders. ‘Cause there are a lot of restrictions, a lot of problems. But I think you’ll see. If you have any ideas on that, that would be great. Because there are a lot of border restrictions, a lot of border problems.”
The latter part of the meeting wasn’t recorded but Bezos called the summit “productive” in a statement after the fact.
“I found today’s meeting with the President-elect, his transition team, and tech leaders to be very productive,” Bezos said. “I shared the view that the administration should make innovation one of its key pillars, which would create a huge number of jobs across the whole country, in all sectors, not just tech — agriculture, infrastructure, manufacturing — everywhere.”
